[ atsushi almost expects kunikida to yell at him the way he always yells at dazai, but.. it doesn't happen. his tone is calm, almost gentle, as he explains to him how to do it. he watches with curious eyes as kunikida takes one of the eggs and gently taps it on the side of the bowl. the contents actually end up where they're supposed to be, and not all over the counter. ]
Gentle.. And less force.. Alright, I can do that!
[ at least he hopes..
atsushi is eager to try it out immediately, so he quickly takes an egg from the carton and pulls the bowl over the counter so it's right in front of him. he gives the egg a long, almost menacing look, like he's trying to stare it down before he imitates what kunikida just did.
gentle.. gentle.. ]
Ah!
[ alright, some of the shell ends up in the bowl, but the yolk and egg white make it where they belong. atsushi's grim expression softens immediately and he turns to look at kunikida with a bright smile. ]
[Maybe he’s getting soft, but Kunikida’s usual temper seems to be absent today. Atsushi is trying so hard to better himself, after all, even if it’s just in this small way, and there’s no reason to get upset with him for making a harmless mistake. Plus, it’ll do his blood pressure some good to remain calm.
He watches like a proud teacher when Atsushi cracks the egg just right, making a cute face of pure concentration as he does it, and Kunikida gives him the tiniest of smiles when only a few eggshells end up in the bowl. Even a perfectionist like him can’t get too upset when Atsushi is beaming so brightly at him.
He nods before grabbing a spoon to fish out the egg shells, and now that they’ve got some intact eggs to work with they can finally make pancakes.]
Yes, that’s good. Just make sure not to leave shells in the bowl. Now show me how you usually make pancakes.
[ oh, seeing kunikida smile, even just a little bit, is so unusual.. atsushi can't force himself to look away immediately and ends up staring just a little while he watches the other fish out the egg shells that ended up in the bowl. ]
I'll try my best!
[ hopefully he'll get good at cracking eggs so he can impress kunikida for real sometime soon..
but for now he gets to preparing the pancake batter, which is something he's actually good at. once that's finished, he holds out the bowl once more so kunikida can look at it. ]
We could add some chocolate chips too, if you like it sweet.
[Honestly everyone should mark down the rare occasions that Kunikida smiles just to see how often it actually happens. It’s not like he has anything against being cheerful, but sometimes there’s not a whole lot to smile about because something (or a certain someone) always messes up his schedule and makes him rearrange the entire day...
Right now though he’s enjoying cooking with Atsushi, and he’ll get the chance to actually be a teacher again. He looks into the bowl of pancake batter and gives a nod, approving of the look of it before reaching into the cabinet to grab a small bag of pecans.]
I don’t have any chocolate chips, but these might suffice.
[Getting all the sweetness from the syrup is his preferred method anyway. He grabs a pan and lightly greases it before putting it on the stove for Atsushi to use.]
The first few pancakes always seem to turn out oddly shaped.
[ ... of course kunikida wouldn't have chocolate chips. somehow it doesn't fit him to have them, so atsushi lets out an awkward little laugh. he's about to suggest something else, but then there's a bag of pecans and atsushi picks them up curiously. ]
I never had those.. Are they sweet?
[ whatever, he'll dunk them in anyways. hopefully he's doing that right.. ]
Right? And they seem to take forever to get done.
[ that's why the first pancake has to be eaten immediately, obviously. atsushi moves over to the stove and pours in the batter for the first pancake, careful not to spill anything. he's already getting hungry.. ]

This is better, right?
